More traditional than most American Jewish weddings, the horah was a single-sex affair: men on one side and women on the other. The wedding was an absolute blast! Paige and I were very proud of the horah at our wedding, but South Africans go above and beyond.
This beautiful chuppah is standing because of my strong arms I thought the question was a bit weird, only to find out that I was being asked to stand next to him at the wedding and be a groomsman! Traditionally, groomsmen literally hold up the four poles of the chuppah, symbolizing the importance of family and friendship in supporting and strengthening a home. Gadi asked me to “hold his pole,” a few months ago. For the Zachs family, this Shabbat dinner is extra-special because the Oblovitz family hosted us for our FIRST Friday night when we moved to Africa over 20 years ago! We blessed the rains down for South Africa (to be sung to the Toto)ĭuring our four days in Cape Town, the wedding was the real star. Per usual, we had Shabbat dinner with Jenith and Eddie. We had an awesome dinner with Romy, Dale, Robyn, Michael, Matt, Simone, and Sampy and another with Lolo and Allan. We have already chronicled our deep love for Cape Town not surprisingly, we re-hit our favorites: Hemelhuijs, Jarryd’s, Origin Coffee, Oranjezicht Market, and Clifton beach ( see long weekend guide). As a good Jewish boy, I always need some mother time. When we arrived in Cape Town, we met #ZachsRTW guest, Jessica, aka “mom.” We had not seen any family since the last time in Africa, so it was really nice to see her familiar face. This is a must do for any foodie heading to Sao Paulo! For $14.50 per person, you get a Michelin-level lunch. In the back of a small art supplies store is the restaurant Peti Gastronomia. We only spent about 16 hours in Sao Paulo, but we do have one recommendation. Now, it’s as easy as a few clicks and a credit card payment. However, we lucked out! Brazil just began to allow e-visas that are completed and processed in a matter of days! For those of you unaware, it used to take multiple visits to the Brazilian embassy and over a week of waiting to get approved. Months ago, this would have been a huge hassle because of Brazil’s (outdated) visa system. We transferred our trusty Chase Ultimate Rewards points to United points and booked SAO-JNB-CPT in business class for 50,000 points and $45.90 per person!ĭue to flight times, we had to spend one night in Sao Paulo. The only direct flight is from Sao Paulo to Johannesburg. While relatively close (it’s all relative when you’re traveling as much as we have), South Africa is a pain in the ass to get to from South America. After a week in Jose Ignacio, it was time for “the audible” back to Cape Town for Gadi and Nisi’s wedding festivities #GCandNisi.
